MEET THE FOUNDER
Lindsay Petry
FOUNDER & PRESIDENT · OPTIMAL ADMISSIONS
I've spent a decade helping students navigate higher education, starting in Residence Life, earning my Master of Arts from Cornell University, moving into the admissions office, and eventually founding Optimal Admissions in 2021.
While working in admissions at Cornell, I discovered the part of the job I loved most wasn't reading applications, it was the conversations. The prospective students at information sessions who just wanted to get it right. The long phone calls with nervous families. The most rewarding moments were when I could take something that felt mysterious and make it make sense for a student or their family. Eventually, that pointed me toward the other side of the desk: independent admissions counseling.

THE WHY
Why I started Optimal Admissions
I kept seeing the same thing: qualified, capable students failing to communicate what made them compelling. Not because they didn't have the potential, but because no one had told them what admissions committees were actually looking for.
The process is deliberately opaque. Institutions rarely explain what an ideal application looks like, which leaves families to guess. I wanted to change that, not by doing the work for students, but by pulling back the curtain and giving them the information they need to make smart decisions themselves.
HOW I WORK
A different kind of approach
My Master of Arts from Cornell focused on classical bioarchaeology — a fancy way of saying I studied ancient lives through human remains. My thesis, Echoes in the Bones, used skeletal evidence to measure the biological impact of Roman rule on the people of ancient Corinth, Greece. It might sound like an unusual background for a college counselor, but it shapes how I work in ways I didn't expect. It taught me to ask better questions, look beneath the surface, help students get genuinely nuanced about their academic interests, and understand the stories hidden beneath the obvious answers — and it means I'm just as at home with a student building a STEM research project as I am editing a paper before publication.
My experience as a first-generation college student has made educating my clients the foundation of our work. I explain the why behind everything. I want students to leave every session understanding the process more deeply than when they arrived — not just checking boxes on a list. It's what I tell almost every family I work with: it's not my job to make decisions for you. It's my job to make sure you have everything you need to make the right ones.
And I bring optimism to every conversation, on purpose. Families often come to me after being told they're too far behind, that a particular school is out of reach, or that they should lower their expectations. That's not how I work. I believe in being realistic — but realistic doesn't mean discouraging. If a student's current profile isn't where it needs to be, I want them to understand why, what can still be improved, and where the strongest opportunities exist. My focus is never on what a student can't do. It's on helping them build the strongest, most authentic application possibile from where they are today.
Every student has strengths worth developing and a story worth telling. My job is to help them see those strengths clearly, build on them strategically, and enter application season with confidence, in both their work and their choices.
OFF THE CLOCK
A little more about me
When I'm not working with students, I'm usually with my dog, Pebbles, or deep into a documentary. I live near Greenville, South Carolina, but work with students across the country — entirely online.
